A 40-foot-tall (12 meters) cross-shaped war memorial standing on public land in ...

WASHINGTON - A 40-foot-tall cross-shaped war memorial standing on public land in Maryland does not represent an impermissible government endorsement of religion, the Supreme Court ruled on Thursday in a major decision testing the boundaries of the U.S. Constitution’s separation of church and state.

The justices, in a 7-2 decision, overturned a lower court ruling that had declared the so-called Peace Cross in Bladensburg unconstitutional in a legal challenge mounted by the American Humanist Association, a group that advocates for secular governance. The concrete cross was erected in 1925 as a memorial to troops killed in World War One.

Justice Samuel Alito, a conservative, wrote for the majority that although the cross is a religious symbol, “its use in the Bladensburg memorial has special significance” because it functions as a war memorial.

wow, just....wow

If you read Ginsberg's dissent only 1% of WWI statues are crosses. If this were a big crescent shaped statue you know it would never have gone up. The majority jumps through hoops to pretend crosses were common public speech rather than recognizing individual private speech.

So I guess only Christians died fighting the Kaiser, right?

Time to erect a Flying Spaghetti Monster...

a cross is not solely unique to christianity ...as long as there is no 'jesus' hanging on it it can be a relatively neutral symbol

There are no church services held there. Everyone but Radicalized democrats know it was erected as a war memorial. It has stood in good standing for damn near a century and now has become part and parcel of where it stands. Maybe lets dig up Bob Byrd from ANC

Supreme Court allows war cross memorial to stand as symbol of 'sacrifice'JUST IN: Supreme Court rules cross in Bladensburg, Maryland, can stand, upholding constitutionality of a religious symbol on public land, but stopping short of creating a clear new standard for evaluating similar displays nationwide. Well I disagree. Inspires too much crazy. A cross has different meanings. Now a cross is universally used as a grave symbol.
