The federal government is expected to try to repeal the so called "medevac laws" after the Federal Court found doctors can remotely assess offshore asylum seekers pursuing medical evacuation.
The Morrison government is also considering an appeal to the decision, which rejected its argument that an asylum seeker needs to be personally assessed by doctors.The federal government will attempt to repeal the medevac laws. Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton said the Federal Court ruling means at least 10 transfer requests that have been ruled invalid would be immediately challenged.
" Anthony Albanese should acknowledge this and vote with us to repeal this dangerous piece of law," Mr Dutton told the newspaper."They voted for this law not having any idea of the consequences. The Australian people voted for the Coalition because we keep the borders secure and we will be abolishing this bill or the boats will restart."
The Federal Court case involved a 29-year-old man from Iraq who was taken to Nauru and who sought approval for transfer to Australia for medical treatment.
