The Supreme Court on Thursday said a 40-foot, 16-ton Latin cross in Bladensburg, Maryland, can stand, upholding the constitutionality of a religious symbol on public land, but stopping short of creating a clear new standard for evaluating similar displays nationwide.
"Although the cross has long been a preeminent Christian symbol, its use in the Bladensburg memorial has a special significance," Justice Alito wrote in the opinion. "For nearly a century, the Bladensburg Cross has expressed the community's grief at the loss of the young men who perished, its thanks for their sacrifice, and its dedication to the ideals for which they fought," he said."Its removal or radical alteration at this date would be seen by many not as a neutral act but as the manifestation of a 'hostility toward religion that has no place in our Establishment Clause traditions."This is a developing story.
7 - 2 decision. Keagan and Bryer joint the other 5
I am not against religion, but I do believe in the separation of Church and State (the foundation on which this country was built). Is a message being sent here?
That's a logical decision since the cross was originally erected on private property by the American Legion. Now that it's on state/county land, the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission is kindly maintaining it.

Good. Glad to see a historical symbol of peace and spirituality will remain standing for years to come.
TLTESQ37 did you know this case was before the Supreme Court?
we obama voters, independents, we the voters, elected trump bc we want more sc justices, who will interpret the constitution, not legislate from the bench; who will protect the unborn n our individual religious freedoms n liberties; n reject lgbtq extreme left nonsense claims.
Case by case basis. I am on with it, but not always. I hope other religious displays are allowed as well.
What if i decide to spit on that cross or sit down and have a picnic right in front of it or let my dog do its business in the shade of it? I'm on public land. If you dont like it, you dont have to look.
This is not ok
First step in creating a Christian Evangelical Republic.
Beautiful day to be a Christian
Well I disagree. Inspires too much crazy.
A cross has different meanings. Now a cross is universally used as a grave symbol.
