PUTRAJAYA has not only reneged on its pledge to repeal repressive security laws, but has also enhanced the powers of the National Security Council with yesterday’s tabling of amendments to the law, said international rights group Human Rights Watch . The NSC Act gives the prime minister authority to declare security areas where special powers would apply, and grants government officials new powers to make warrantless arrests, impose curfews, take possession of land, buildings and other property, and dispense with inquests following the use of lethal force.
