Only five Republicans joined the Democrats in voting to convict Mr Trump after a final vote tally of 55-45 and the two thirds majority required to impeach Mr Trump was not reached.
The seven GOP senators who joined with all Democrats in finding Trump guilty were Richard Burr from North Carolina, Bill Cassidy from Louisiana, Susan Collins from Maine, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Mitt Romney of Utah and Lisa Murkowski from Alaska. The outcome of the trial means Mr Trump can run for president in 2024 as a candidate.
