Sen. Tim Scott, author of the GOP-backed police reform bill, says that the legislation would leverage federal funding to compel change in local police departments. If local departments don’t comply with the law, they won’t be eligible for federal funds.

But it has also led to disagreements between the senator and Trump over the president's rhetoric relating to the issues, something Scott made no secret of on"This Week" when asked by Karl about the recent resignation of Mary Elizabeth Taylor, one of the highest-ranking African American officials in the administration who served as assistant secretary of state for legislative affairs.

"In her letter of resignation she writes: 'the president's comments and action surrounding racial injustice and Black Americans cut sharply against my core values and convictions, I must follow the dictates of my conscience and resign,'" Karl said, asking Scott,"Have you ever felt that way? That his actions cut sharply against your core values and convictions?"

I've spoken out against those things publicly, and I also called him and we had constructive conversations," Scott said.

"Here's what I say: I think Mary Elizabeth is a wonderful person. Brilliant. She has an incredibly bright future. She's following her convictions," he continued, noting that his own convictions have led him to work with the president on initiatives targeting the Black community, such as"opportunity zones" and increased funding for historically Black colleges and universities.

Does anyone really believe or trust the GOP? They are the ones advocating to go out and bust heads, to take a very hard line on anyone protesting (unless it’s them). That they have the solution to end police violence/brutality?

timscott is a hack and wrong.

In this interview he complains that Bolton didn’t come in front of the Senate to testify...SenatorTimScott voted to block Bolton from coming to testify.

So, he’s saying they would be defunded.

Better than defunding the cops like liberals want to do.

So to still get tanks follow the rules.... Ok sounds cool

They’ll still get federal funds, they might not receive federal grants on top of those funds. The Republican plan has about as many consequences for bad behavior as you’d expect from a Republican plan....

BlackVotesMatter

Is the bill called 'Sellout' by any chance?

So...the 'honor system'? What could go wrong...🙄

So a black Republican Scott Is putting forth a bill to Thwart white Democrat Bidens.. Police Bill of Rights

Why not do that (compel change or de-fund) with Democratic states instead of ruining police forces?

No surprise from “kids-in-cages” cruelty, but still abhorrent: Trump confirms that he held off on imposing sanctions against Chinese officials involved with the Xinjiang mass detention camps because doing so would have interfered with his trade deal with Beijing. SenatorTimScott

Makes sense to me. Just like when fed money was tied to the 55 mph speed limit, the states complied. They’ll do anything to keep the money flowing.
