NEW: The Supreme Court sent the Trump administration's request to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census back to a lower court Thursday, giving challengers another chance to block it

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court sent the Trump administration's request to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census back to a lower court Thursday, giving challengers another chance to block it.

The court's decision therefore doesn't end the dispute. And a separate challenge to the administration's motive for asking the citizenship question remains alive in another federal district court. That inquiry could drag on for much of the summer, jeopardizing the timetable for printing the census questionnaire.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross directed the Census Bureau to add the question last year based on the Justice Department's request. He said the"need for accurate citizenship data and the limited burden that the reinstatement of the citizenship question would impose outweigh fears about a potentially lower response rate."

Supreme Court rules on conservative effort to weaken federal agenciesThank goodness. Conservatives are trying to make government -- OUR SELF GOVERNANCE -- obsolete. Glad to see the Court put a stop to this particular tactic. Peepster3 They are actually giving them the continuation of the administrative state as their enemy, as opposed to making Congress & the courts be the bad guy to conservatives. Don't buy the hype. Congress should be making regs, not the agencies.
