The reach of laws against female genital mutilation will be tested in the High Court today, as it considers calls for a retrial of three people accused of carrying out a practice known as Khatna on two young sisters in Wollongong. The appeal stems from Australia's first prosecution on the matterFormer nurse Kubra Magennis and a Dawoodi Bohra community leader, Shabbir Mohammedbhai Vaziri, were found guilty along with the girls' mother of breaching the law in 2015.

In the months after the trio's conviction, a medical examination showed the tip of the clitoral head was visible in both girls, excluding the possibility that it had been removed.

My sister, an RN, nursed a girl in Sydney 20 years ago who suffered FGM and was brought in to hosp by her mother as the girl did not stop bleeding. If this is the first case in the courts then it's disturbing as its not the first case in Australia. It's more common than we think.

Multiple adults in a ritual touching of the genitalia of minors. Sounds like assault to me.

I think the people to determine that are the medical profession. They should be informing the community and the courts.

Throw those practitioners out of the country!

It is 'mutilation,' say no more.

really? we r taking in muslims n now we have problems with girls genital mutilation A shocking horror to d girls

Why would we even need to make this determination? This is another one of the many, many reasons why Islam is not compatible with the modern world.

Is that a matter of interpretation? Weird.

How about any genital 'alterations' performed on minors or performed on unwilling adults.

Altering normal anatomy? On someone who cannot consent?

...and other benefits of diversity.

What about circumcision? Will Australian parents be convicted?

FGM to be officially halal. Got to keep muslims happy, even though it’s nothing to do with Islam.

“No touching, no cutting, none, zero, absolutely no”. How’s that for a definition. Male mutilation should likewise be banned.

geoffrey_payne Oh, spare me such nonsense.

New Zealand court halts first extradition to ChinaAn Auckland man wanted for murder in China has been spared extradition from New Zealand, in a decision his lawyer says has 'profound human rights importance, which will resonate through out the Common Law world' I wonder if Australia would do the same. Or perhaps Scombag would throw you into the lion's den at the first opportunity. Does this mean NZ protects murderers? Strange timing, with the extradition law about to be passed in HK.
