Debates over the census are usually reserved for demographers and statisticians, but the dispute over the citizenship question is one of high politics.

with large numbers of immigrants fear that millions of households will refuse to fill out the census forms if the citizen question is included out of concern that the confidential information will be shared with immigration agents.

Seats in the House of Representatives and in state legislatures are allocated based on census data. And the Constitution calls for “the actual Enumeration” of the population and says “representatives shall be apportioned … counting the whole number of persons in each state.” This has been understood to mean that all residents are counted, regardless of whether they are citizens.

Ross said he chose to add the new question to improve compliance with the Voting Rights Act of 1965. But lawyers and judges scoffed at this explanation as far-fetched. Federal attorneys have enforced the Voting Rights Act for more than 50 years without needing block-by-block data on the citizenship of the residents, they said.During Tuesday’s argument, Justice Elena Kagan called the administration’s arguments “contrived.

Should we expand the Supreme Court?Commentators say a knockdown battle over every open Supreme Court seat is demoralizing for the country and cements the perception of the court as a political body. There have been a number of Supreme Court reform proposals discussed over the years. Merrick Garland was a true American hero and his memory will live on. The precedent was set. Presidents don’t pick a Supreme Court Justice with less than a year in office. The Dems knew they would lose so that is why they are so bitter. Have a better lead in next time & maybe you won’t get a Trump. Dem Joe Biden rule was used as precedent to not confirm Garland - if you are a Dem, and a Dem makes the rule that is abided by - doesn’t get any fairer than that!

Accuracy at core of Supreme Court case over census questionThe accuracy of the once-a-decade population count is at the heart of the Supreme Court case over the Trump administration's effort to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census. …Democrats want to water down your state’s representatives and voice by allowing multitudes of illegals to be counted in the census without noting if they are citizens. This is the most brain dead move by Democrats. A census is a waste. Voter registration should be the basis for the census. If you don't vote, you don't get counted. The census determines State funding, State representation, electoral college votes. Yes, it's important to know how many non-citizens are living within each State.

In high-stakes census case, Supreme Court will dissect Trump’s effort to catalogue noncitizensThe administration’s plan to include a citizenship question on the 2020 form has brought intense scrutiny on Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. will they start micro chipping them as well, maybe barcodes? The Justice Department insisted they needed the question to help enforce the voting rights act, so the first question should be 'what mechanism of enforcement requires that enumeration'? How could less information possibly be better. This is what a census is for.
