The accuracy of the once-a-decade population count is at the heart of the Supreme Court case over the Trump administration's effort to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census.

FILE - In this Jan. 24, 2019, file photo, the Supreme Court is seen at sunset in Washington. Vast changes in America and technology have dramatically altered how the census is conducted. But the accuracy of the once-a-decade population count is at the heart of the Supreme Court case over the Trump administration’s effort to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census. The justices hear arguments in the case Tuesday, April 23.

The citizenship question has not been asked on the census form sent to every American household since 1950, and the administrations desire to add it is now rife with political implications and partisan division. No population count is perfect, and census designers strive to create a questionnaire that is clear and easy to answer.

It seems likely that the census taker himself was responsible for the confusion in Robert Kagans citizenship status. Dozens of families who lived near the Kagans have similar crossed-out entries in the citizenship column.

The SupremeCourt in Plyler v. Doe (1982) ruled that citizenship questions ( requesting birth cert. over passports etc) have a 'chilling effect'. They ruled that you do not have to be a citizen to get a free public education or EqualProtection. Chilling effect again? 2020Census

AveriHarper Accuracy... congressional representation is based off citizenship

We should not set our legislative body, size and scope, by counting people who are not legal citizens. Democrats, once again, want to steal elections.

Read the responses, now what does the Constitution say.

So what's your opinion about Vladimirovich Putin? He is a missed prominent figure amidst all these circuses.

My wife is proud to be an immigrant who followed all the rules and will soon be a citizen. She finished her civics test last month and will take the oath in May. If she was still in immigrant she would be happy to answer the census question.

Everyone makes perfectly good and accurate sense pertaining to the citizenship question on the 2020 census. Unfortunately none of that matters to liberals, illegals must vote with no questions asked .

States receive federal funding and Congressional representative seats based on population. That census question is to ensure illegals are not included in the measurement and to ensure fairness/equal treatment among states.

What is it people don’t get about Congressional Districts and Electoral votes being determined by the population of an area determined by the Census?

…Democrats want to water down your state’s representatives and voice by allowing multitudes of illegals to be counted in the census without noting if they are citizens. This is the most brain dead move by Democrats.

A census is a waste. Voter registration should be the basis for the census. If you don't vote, you don't get counted.

The census determines State funding, State representation, electoral college votes. Yes, it's important to know how many non-citizens are living within each State.

Should we expand the Supreme Court?Commentators say a knockdown battle over every open Supreme Court seat is demoralizing for the country and cements the perception of the court as a political body. There have been a number of Supreme Court reform proposals discussed over the years. Merrick Garland was a true American hero and his memory will live on. The precedent was set. Presidents don’t pick a Supreme Court Justice with less than a year in office. The Dems knew they would lose so that is why they are so bitter. Have a better lead in next time & maybe you won’t get a Trump. Dem Joe Biden rule was used as precedent to not confirm Garland - if you are a Dem, and a Dem makes the rule that is abided by - doesn’t get any fairer than that!
