Japanese court grants bail to ousted Nissan chair Carlos Ghosn, prosecutors appeal GlobeBusiness

A Japanese court granted bail to ousted Nissan Motor Chairman Carlos Ghosn on Tuesday but prosecutors swiftly appealed the decision, delaying an immediate release of the once-feted executive after more than three months in jail.

If convicted on all the charges, he faces up to a decade in jail. The ex-chairman of Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi Motors has denied wrongdoing. The case has cast a harsh light globally on Japan’s criminal justice system, which allows suspects to be detained for long periods and prohibits defence lawyers from being present during interrogations that can last eight hours a day.

There was a heavy media presence outside the Tokyo detention centre where Ghosn is being held, with throngs of reporters setting up ladders to get a clear sight over the tall fence. A helicopter briefly buzzed overhead. In an interview later with Japan’s Nikkei newspaper, he said Nissan executives opposed to his plans for closer ties with Renault were behind the allegations against him.

Not going to happen Trudeau needs something to rally his useful idiots Climate change has been used to emotionally manipulate more people than any other social issue. Delayed? How about abolished? More power to you, Moe. Less power to you Trudeau, especially when stating that CO2 is a pollutant when it is not. CO2 is greening the Earth. More CO2 = bigger crops and less water consumption to accomplish it.

Appeals Court upholds ruling ordering $17B in damages to Quebec smokersThe Quebec Court of Appeal has upheld a landmark judgment that ordered three tobacco companies to pay billions of dollars in damages to Quebec smokers. Of course... the courts ruling in favour of giving Quebec free hand outs again. I’m not surprised. These tobacco companies should tell this judge to eat it. Smoking was their choice. I agree with commenter above - smoking is/was their choice. Typical times we live in - no one ever has to take responsibility for their bad behaviour. Sue the product maker or service provider. Get the lawyers involved. Smoking is a bad habit, an addiction. Own your problem! Is it because they didnt have french pictures on the cigarette packs to show them what was going to happen to them? This ruling is stupid. chioces
