The speech at issue in the case is that of same-sex couples, not businesspeople like Smith, gay rights lawyers argue. | J. Scott Applewhite/AP PhotoThe Supreme Court is set to hear arguments Monday in a case that gives conservative justices a chance to allow same-sex marriage opponents to ignore laws that protect LGBTQ people against discrimination.
LGBTQ rights advocates say Smith and her business, 303 Creative, should be treated like any other business and required to serve customers without regard to their sexuality. The speech at issue in the case is that of same-sex couples, not businesspeople like Smith, gay rights lawyers argue.
In the years that followed the 2015 decision, conservative justices have sought to take up cases presenting issues similar to the one being argued Monday about the rights of web designers.
Fears in the LGBTQ community about legal setbacks have increased since the Supreme Court issued its decision in June overturning the nearly half-century-old federal right to abortion.
Are these the same people that allowed businesses to discriminate against people who didn't wear masks?
NO! Ones sexual preferences should not ever decide what ones business is allowed to say they want to be involved with or not ever? Whole different style and not what everyone should have to approve of so go elsewhere? Do I go to a gay club NO? Sex should be private not pushed
My work is mine. Lincoln was clear about slavery and the SCOTUS should so rule.
sounds like the same grievance all over again . thinks the ruing will be the same .
There is no right to a website. Anyone who thinks there is has been on their phone far too long.
Radical democrats encourage same sex marriage and claim they want to save environment. If men wed men and women wed women they can’t multiply.Human race will disappear and environment will become obsolete.USCongress TheUSSupremeCo1 CNN MSNBC foxandfriends
It’s the “Jack the cake baker” case all over again. Time to put the nail in this coffin.
Individual rights outlined in our constitution should prevail over collective rights every time.
Where are those power lines terrorist when you need them?
Any couple asking a professional web designer to work on their website is ridiculous. There are dozens of templates out there for free.
Headline easily could have been 'case could undercut freedom of speech and religious freedom.' Save us from the liberal media and their spin.
This is a “what if” litigation! Alliance Defending Freedom PAC just bring another frivolous case to their conservative court! No one even tried to get this woman to build site! One more slow removal of personal rights by religious fanatics!
They should be careful. If the business can turn away gay people, then other businesses will be allowed to turn away bigots against them. And there are more businesses that will turn away bigots than queer people.
These people lied to get on the bench, have conflicts of interest or leak information to supporters. America needs to clean house.
what happened to the disclaimer in almost every private business, “we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone without giving any reason”, why are businesses forced to do something they don’t believe in or don’t want to do for any reason FirstAmendment
'Stay out of our bedrooms' until we bring our kink into your streets and force you to deny your religious freedom by making us cakes and websites.
Colorado cannot prohibit the exercise of religion.
Creatives are not required to express messages they find objectionable or cause 'moral injury'. Let's stick with that.
Even if they had to do business by law I wouldn’t trust them to do a great job. They’d either overcharge, do a mediocre job or sabotage the whole thing & just say OOPS, SORRY.
People, nobody is sueing this person. She's the one asking the court if it's okay to discriminate against same-sex couples because if she does without asking permission 1st, she's breaking a Colorado anti-discrimination law.
Let me fix that for you. The Supreme Court will hear arguments today in a case that could undercut the free exercise of religion. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”
You mean a case that could undercut Christians rights
No shirt. No shoes. We reserve the right.
“We just want to get married” to YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE OUR CAKES AND WEB SITES or we will try and destroy you. Conservatives all through the 90’s were right.
Allowing a web designer to honor their religious beliefs does not 'undercut LGBTQ rights.' There is no 'right' to another's labor. That's slavery. If someone doesn't want to design your site, hire someone else.
I do not like bold men. I am not going to serve them and take it to the Supreme Court.
To rephrase that in an accurate manner: 'The Supreme Court will hear arguments today in a case that could undercut First Amendment rights.'
It's time for SCOTUS to codify hate into law, once again. 😒
I wish these people would advertise their bigotry so people can decide to use their services or not. Hang a shingle, put a sign in the window. Let us know.
Why would anyone want to hire someone who doesn’t agree with their lifestyle. There has to be other website designers they could use
So, the GOP better be careful with this one. The ‘Twitter Files’ will be directly impacted. Twitter is a private company and falls under the same rules. If SCOTUS says the designer has the choice, so does Twitter. MAGAT
I’d rather hire someone who believes I have a right to exist rather than force someone who hates me. Just saying.
How many web designers do you think are in Colorado? Why are you harassing this person when you can just go to other companies
'Case that could undercut LGBTQ rights' Is this an editorial? The editor that approved this is clearly biased.
