A Catholic prelate believes martial law should not be lifted in certain areas in Mindanao.

Ozamiz Archbishop Martin Jumoad said martial law should not be lifted in areas where the peace and order situation are still unstable.

“If the military believes they have already neutralized the rebels, then their decision has to be respected,” he said in an interview.Martial Law, Jumoad said should not be lifted in said areas “unless the military believes that said places are now okay.”“Mindanao needs Martial Law. This is good for us here,” Jumoad said in a previous interview.“Others may not understand us but if you live in Mindanao then your eyes will be opened ‘why,'” said Jumoad.

On Monday, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said he is no longer inclined to recommend another extension of martial law in Mindanao. However, he said they are still waiting for the recommendation of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police. Last February, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of extending martial rule in Mindanao until end of 2019 in a vote of 9-4.
