University of NSW professor George Williams has hit out at Australia’s secrecy and counterterrorism laws, describing them to Sky News as “hyper-legislation” that goes much further than other countries with a greater terror threat.

“Other countries often look on Australia as being quite remarkable when it comes to the laws we’ve passed since September 11 2001,” Professor Williams said. “Firstly it's just the number of laws - it’s actually up to 82 counter-terrorism laws passed by our national parliament. “That's been referred to as hyper-legislation - something you don’t even find in the United States.

” The UNSW professor added how the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation has the power to detain “non-suspects” for “up to a week” and can “force [them] to answer questions.” “Many of our laws go further than what you see in those other countries, like the power of ASIO to have people detained. “That’s not even something you even find in a country like Israel.

If journalists used their brains when reporting there would be no need for all these secrecy acts. Report the news don’t try and be the news. If they find something suspicious report it to the authorities !!!

Media unites to challenge government secrecy | Sky News AustraliaAustralian media companies are this week joining forces to fight for greater freedom of press. \n\nThe ‘Your Right to Know’ campaign challenges government secrecy around matters of public interest. \n\nThe campaign comes in response to Australian Federal Police raids targeting the ABC Sydney headquarters and the home of a News Corp journalist over stories printed earlier this year. \n\nNews Corp Executive Chairman Michael Miller said current legislation was “restricting journalists from being able to do their job”. \n\n“In a democracy, it’s a responsibility of the government to be open to the public,” he said. \n\nImage: News Corp Australia But you cookers encouraged all of this. Increased police presence. The office of Home Affairs. Tougher penalties against protesters. Never ending anti-terror legislation that erodes personal freedoms and privacy. This is exactly what you wanted - and now you're surprised? Are they fighting for the rights of all Australians? Or just the rights of journalists? If it's illegal for me to obtain and report certain information , why should journalists get a free pass? Journalists shouldn't be above the law and they shouldn't have special rights Say the leftists with a byline.
