Boris Johnson’s position must be in question. But this devastating ruling bolsters parliament against many other outside forces, says Guardian columnist Martin Kettle

The supreme court has delivered a comprehensive demolition of Boris Johnson’s government and its handling of Brexit. The unanimous judgment of the 11 justices, announced by Lady Hale this morning, amounts to a root and branch rejection of the prime minister’s attempts to rule without parliament, to take Britain out of the European Union by 31 October without a deal, and to contrive a premature general election. The judgment was incisive and without any waffle.

Johnson will not execute the decision. He believes he is the divine trinity: law making, executing and judging. There goes the separation of powers, the foundation of all democratic systems. Johnson joins dictators who concentrate all powers to safeguard their personal power.

This is the mark of a functioning democracy. The Judiciary is there to uphold the law no matter what. At the same time, the executive is under a duty to exercise the will of the people i.e. the majority voted for Brexit.

Whatever the machinations of various groups it is for the electorate to decide the fate of the government
