The asylum seeker Tamil family at the centre of a dramatic deportation bid will remain in Australia for at least another 12 days as their lawyers prepare for a 'full and final' hearing on the complex case.

Priya and Nadesalingam and their Australian-born daughters Kopika and Tharunicaa. He said Tharunciaa’s "full and final hearing" – which is not intended to be heard on September 18 – would require significant preparation. The court application only applies to Tharunicaa but her lawyers have been assured the family will not be separated.

A succession of courts, including the High Court, have previously found the parents and the eldest child are not refugees and do not qualify for Australia's protection.

Certainly doing the Federal liberal government a lot of damage.........Morrison must over rule Dutton, his is the PM.

In the 12 days to the hearing: 680 people will be admitted to hospital from self harm 65 people will commit suicide 18 people will be murdered 2,500 people will be rough sleepers in winter. But the news cycle will be taken up by this Tamil family who should have left years ago.

Interest to see what 'rabbit out the hat' the lawyers have. The kids are 1 year apart . If the eldest didn't qualify under the law , how does the youngest ? There hasn't been a law amendment during this time, or a precedent & SriLanka hasn't civilly descended .

They really should be sent home, that would be best for them. Follow the rules and try again later. Morrison and Dutton have this one spot on.

the 'drama' is all manufactured on the evidence, there's nothing controversial about sending them back whatsoever
