The idea was dumped two years ago, but Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a plan to bring-back an expanded version of the policy. Labor and the Greens have argued the measure would “demonise” people on welfare.
Deputy Leader Richard Marles said on Friday Labor was for “anything that gets people off drugs but we want to know that this actually works”. Under the plan, 5,000 Newstart and Youth Allowance recipients would be tested for illicit substances, including heroin and cocaine. If passed, trials will be carried out in areas of New South Wales, Queensland and Perth. Image: News Corp Australia
Anne_Ruston
Anne_Ruston Seems like the kind of thing to do when you hate the poor and want to funnel cash to your mates
Anne_Ruston Y'know Anne, the latest figures from Jora SA shows 12.555 vacancies! How many unemployed people are there, with a unemployment rate of 6.9%. Something seems seriously wrong with your employment strategy!
It might be time to boot Scotty and bring in Dutton
What happen to the plan to make electricity reliable and cheaper this is way more important than drug testing if come the next election lnp havent fixed up electricity their gone
Trumpism politics, it’s diversion time.
Good move Scomo.
Also curious, does this testing extend to alcohol and cigarettes or only illegal drugs ? tax
I am all for taking measures to prevent welfare recipients from buying drugs with their benefits however, what is the punishment ? To suspend payments, take away their ability to house themselves and eat creating an extreme poverty (and crime) epidemic ?
If the govt will give me a pension, I’m happy to piss in a bottle every week. selffundedretiree
Meanwhile..the Coalition government’s inaction mismanagement and incompetence on energy policy still not addressing infrastructure shortfalls and their greedy coal electricity company mates price gouging Australians has seen MORE MASSIVE ELECTRICITY PRICE INCREASES..9% this year
Desperate to get welfare recipients onto the LNP run welfare card so they can rort Australian taxpayers for billions in overpriced ‘administration costs’...welfare will end up costing hard working Australians 10’s of billions more stuffing the pockets of LNP members
✅ The consumption of these substances is a Crime, so why doesn't Morrison's LNP Govt randomly test every Australian? ✅ Maybe he's a closet supporter of financially well off people snorting illegal drugs because they're above the law? ✅ Most working poor are subjected to tests
Good luck trying to police it.
A great idea. Periodic urine samples are a minor inconvenience for taxpayer funded welfare.
Will my granddad. Have to submit to a Anal search Before he gets his pension.
Everyone else has to be tested so whats the problem,
You can’t fix problems by withdrawing investment
Before recommendations, first found solutions. Problem with our government is, they have hundreds recommendations but not one positive solution.
Imagine if they put the same effort into the economy we would be in the same position as we were in Australias last recession.....
Better commission another report at a cost to the taxpayer to show it'd cost more tax dollars than it'd save.
Another bullshit, like Smart meters were introduced to Australia regardless proof theyhave wary ill effects on people. Because they were making people sick England and Swedish government stopped using them. But regardless of that Australian government introduced them in Australia
AStrongerOZ Good. Taxpayers should not be funding the habits of drug users.
When dis cruel government will stop punishing poor people. Why ScoMo thinks that scam will work in Australia if didn’t work in America and New Zealand. Before you introduce that, government have to open Rehabilitation centers so everyone tested positive must be sent to rehab.
Watch lefties scream. Most of the people being tested in this trial are their constituents.
And if they test positive, lock them up in jail.
Scott Morrison and tax payer funded Politicans should be tested as well...
Drug test the Goverment !
if you have nothing to hide then you have nothing to fear
