Women's rights activist Maria Chin Abdullah says sentencing Naza World group executive chairman's ex-wife to 7 days' jail for violating visitation rights is a 'total disgrace to judicial system'. FMTNews

PETALING JAYA: Vocal women’s rights activist Maria Chin Abdullah says Muslim women are still being discriminated in the shariah legal system after a woman was sentenced to jail for rescheduling visitation dates for her children to be with her ex-husband.

Last July, the Shariah Court allowed Emilia’s ex-husband visitation rights to their three children, Fawwaz, Faiz and Farhan. However, on Oct 6 and 7 last year, Faisal was not allowed to visit the children as Emilia had brought her children with her to a religious function in Baling, according to Malaysiakini.

She had apparently notified Faisal in advance about the Baling trip and asked for replacement dates, but he did not show up on Oct 13 and 14. Maria alleged that Emilia is a victim of abuse and had struggled with the trauma of being in an abusive relationship that was also widely covered by the media then.

“This is absolutely astounding. It has been four years since the case was first brought to court and Emilia has since been granted full custody over her children. Why is she still being harassed?” Maria asked.
