For those of us who remember riding the rollercoaster of emotions while watching the brilliant yet horribly flawed career of John McEnroe, it's not hard to see some similarities with Australia's own Nick Kyrgios.
Once dubbed"the Super Brat", McEnroe was able to captivate a crowd with his remarkable shot-making, but the cheers would almost instantly turn to jeers to accompany a vicious display of the American's notorious temper. Sound familiar? Richard Ings spent many hours officiating McEnroe's matches and many more deciding on sanctions for the seven-time grand slam winner as a leading umpire and then head of officiating for the ATP tour.
He says the level of petulance and misbehaviour displayed by Kyrgios puts even John McEnroe to shame.John McEnroe — "You cannot be serious!" "I never found him to be threatening. I never found him to be belittling. I just found him to get quite angry from time to time. Nick Kyrgios by comparison really belittles the officials. This is extremely rare in professional tennis, even taking John McEnroe's history into account."Leaving the court
What short memories you have...
Ban him! He won't stop, thinks he is invincible and untouchable, people like this don't change!
They won’t ban him, to many people pay to see this type of behaviour. They should off banned the bad behaved players of yesteryear
Investigate betting on matches he plays. That should be the start.
McEnroe was worse. He would invent a tantrum depending on the situation of the match. Blatant cheating. Kyrgios is out of control which is sad but not cheating.
McEnroe NEVER gave up, no matter how ghastly he was with his comments & behaviour. That’s the difference. He fought to the end.
And McEnroe won multiple slams
Banned and told he come return until he's got his anger under control.
'make an example'? Bit of a tired cliche. Certainly treat NK as he deserves, pity it wasn't done with JM those years ago, might have stopped the rot.
He should be kicked out of the sport.
Give it a rest armchair nobody’s. So you don’t like what Kyrgios says & does. His talent, his career, his decisions, he owes you nothing.
He epitomizes domestic violence. God help his family when he has one.
For God's sakes, he's mentally unbalanced.there is nothing you can do. One day his racket smashing, will hit a ball boy in the face . So take action now.
Kyrgios is a Pig! He Spat at the Umpire should get banned for life! Tipical Peasant with a Bit of money!
Yes, he's a witch, but he didn't do what those 3 did, doesn't matter, we don't like him. Yes, he's a witch. and the mob demanded he be made an example of, if only for their own sake. HangingJury Can see why Julian is sitting in a jail, and Morrison is sitting in the lodge.
He seems uncommitted to tennis as his profession IMO. It’s a means to big $$$$ but I see no love for the game, no respect for opponents, no self discipline. I cannot understand people who delight in seeing him rage & rant. It’s behaviour unbecoming. He should be better than that.
12 month ban - simple. Hit him where it really hurts - no competition money at all due to his poor sportsmanship.
Persistent bad behaviour should result in suspensions. But it should be about what he, his opponents and his umpires deserve, not being made an example of.
He’s like a spoilt 4 year old, get rid of him I say
He is not fit to represent our country.
Banned for a few years and denied income would no doubt make him see sense. He turns up to a tournament, acts like a dick and still gets paid. Unfortunately he appeals to kids, Mr8 and his friends think he’s hilarious 🙄
He needs to be banned for at least two years.
Most definitely he needs to be banned!!
Perhaps the first step would be a media ban on reporting on him. He would lose sponsorships, we wouldn't have to hear about him and he would go away.
Expel him.
Kyrgios should be banned from tennis. Full stop.
