Peter Jennings from ASPI_org says he is fearful of a “Tiananmen Square style response” and that China is “building the foundations” to explain why it might need to intervene. Credlin

Executive Director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute Peter Jennings says Beijing is “quite publicly signalling” they are prepared to enter Hong Kong to retain order, which “could be terribly violent”. Speaking to Sky News, Mr Jennings said he is fearful of a “Tiananmen Square style response” and that China is “building the foundations” to explain why it might need to intervene.

Mr Jennings said Australia needs to bring more attention to the protests and should be “a good international citizen” that stands up for human rights and “appropriate values”. “Our penchant to want to look the other way because of our economic relationship with China will not be sustainable if we have the situation where the People’s Liberation Army march into Hong Kong,” he said.
