A$AP Rocky, who has been held in Sweden for weeks since his arrest over a street fight after he performed at a festival, has pleaded not guilty to assault and claimed he was acting in self-defense as his trial begins

A$AP Rocky appeared in court in Sweden on Tuesday, almost a month after being detained in Stockholm.U.S. rapper . The highly-publicised case has angered fans and ignited tensions between Sweden and the U.S. after Donald Trump called for the rapper’s release.

The musician, born Rakim Mayers, pleaded not guilty to assault over a fight that broke out in Stockholm on June 30. Swedish prosecutor Daniel Suneson told the court on Tuesday that Mayers and two other accused attacked the alleged 19-year-old victim by punching, kicking and hitting him with a bottle,. The court was also shown 13 minutes of surveillance footage from a fast food restaurant that showed the lead up to the fight, Suneson said. A video appearing to show the 30-year-old assaulting the alleged victim had circulated online.

Mayers was arrested on July 3, following his performance at Smash hip-hop festival, and has been held in Sweden since July 5. He was held on suspicion of aggravated assault, and later charged with assault causing actual bodily harm, almost three weeks into his detention. Stockholm District Court ordered his detention on July 5, while his case is being investigated.on July 2, he told his followers that the alleged victim was following him.

Mayers’ lawyer, Slobodan Jovicic, told the court on Tuesday:"He admits that he threw the plaintiff on the ground, that he stepped on his arm and punched or pushed his shoulder." AFP
