JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg has approved a historic R5-billion settlement agreement in the silicosis case.WATCH:The agreement affects people who contracted silicosis or pulmonary tuberculosis during or after being employed at gold mines, from March 1965. The six mining companies paying out are African Rainbow Minerals‚ Anglo American SA‚ AngloGold Ashanti‚ Gold Fields‚ Harmony and Sibanye Stillwater.

The companies admit that they failed to take necessary precautions to protect their employees in the past.

MbuyiseniNdlozi Finally! How many people has those companies employed since 1965? How many died? Those affected will be compensated between R70 000- R500 000, does it depend on the severity? Are families allowed to claim on behalf of deceased? How much are the lawyers getting out of it?
