Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam has apologised after a controversial extradition bill sparked a series of mass protests. Ms Lam issued a statement, saying she recognises the 'strong and different views in society' and had shelved the legislation indefinitely 'with a view to restoring calmness in society as soon as possible' whilst also 'avoiding any injuries to any persons'.

Tens of thousands of people have participated in demonstrations against the bill, which would allow suspects to be sent to mainland China to face trial. Despite the government's decision to pause the legislation, rallies have continued with protestors demanding Ms Lam step down as Chief Executive, as well as calls for the bill never to be debated again, and police officers held to account for what been deemed to be overzealous violence against protestors earlier in the week.
