Quebec’s contentious secularism bill banning religious symbols for teachers, police officers and other public servants in positions of authority was voted into law late Sunday.
“My prediction,” he said, “is that neither the Liberals, nor the Parti Quebecois — I don’t think they’ll be in power in five years — would want to change this law.” Bill 21 also forbids anyone giving or receiving a state service with their face covered — largely seen as a measure targeting full-face Islamic veils.
Despite criticism from across the country by federal and provincial politicians, human rights advocates and many other groups, Legault’s government has stayed united in its drive to adopt the legislation. Bill 21 was the second law debated and passed over the weekend. In a 62 to 42 vote, the government used its majority around 4 a.m. Sunday to push through Bill 9, which reforms the province’s immigration system.
While specific wording on the two proposed tests isn’t included in the bill, the legislation permits the province to institute the tests by way of regulation.
Is it really a sin to wear what you want in public work? Maybe if it's too revealing, but Quebec feels it's wrong to cover up. Critical error. How ya like that Canada?! You gonna be forced to remove your garments under Catholic control. This wouldnt happen under protestant rule
These narrow minded dictators are at it again!
It is Quebec’s right to enforce secularism as religion, has no place in government. However, as long as a persons face is not covered, I don’t think it really matters. A turban is fine it doesn’t cover the face, whereas, a niqab is not as it covers the face - it’s simple.
Good for Quebec. Now let’s get this right across Canada.
Perfect for Muslims
Now let’s follow suit in other provinces..
Religions are the source of the most heinous crimes in history, not the least of which is genocide (properly used here). Why this isn't hailed as a landmark moment of human progress is mystifying. To support and promote Religion is to reject most progressive human rights.
Well, I do think that this is mostly about Islam, and so I say .... well done Quebec. There is simply no way that the core beliefs of that ideology are not intolerant, supremacist, misogynistic, cruel and violent. Give islamists an inch, and lose a mile. Islam is not benign.
Adopts secularism....? Where are we ...? 18th century..?
👏👏👏👏👏
Oh what is Trudeau to do!😂😂😂 punish Quebec, or sit in his hands till after the election.😂😂😂😂😂 such a corner he is in.
Treaudope will be pissed with Quebec
Are wedding bands religious symbols?
I happen to agree with the Quebec governments new bill. should apply to all religious symbols like crosses, head scarfs, anything worn for religious puroses.Even Hutterite dresses. Do a complete ban of all so that no religious group left out. Then it is fair.
Bon job gang de racistes! Fucking Quebec showing it’s true bigoted and racist colours for all the world to witness. ComeToOntario YoureWelcomeHere
Oh my gosh, it really did pass.
There is grandparenting for those currently in positions. Do they have to sew a certificate to their clothes to remind people of that status to (hopefully) diminish harassment? What about Mormon underwear, circumcision, tattoos, etc.this will lead to imaginative court challenges.
It is not secularism but precisely targeting Muslims! Are you going to ban cross signs necklace Christian women wearing or Jewish hat on men?No you won't do that..only Muslim women!..Quebec type of barbarism!!
Just like after the leave side narrowly lost the referendum, who did they openly blame, the Anglos and the immigrants. Not much has changed Francophone bigotry is alive and well.
What will Mr Singh do? He will no longer be allowed in Quebec. lol
