Comment: What I wish I could have said to Folau before he took to Instagram

I’m sure that’s not the case. The comedian, magician and outspoken atheist Penn Jillette once famously said that he doesn’t respect religious people who don’t proselytise. “How much do you have to hate somebody to believe everlasting life is possible and not tell them that?” he said. According to Jillette, something being “socially awkward” is not a good reason to keep quiet when the stakes are as high as divine judgment.

Given the repeated "atrocities" committed by footballers who continue to play the game after a minor sanction, it’s hard to escape the feeling that Folau has found himself a modern heretic to a particular kind of orthodoxy., the author and social critic, writes about three possible options of the kind of “public square” we can choose, two of which he says are bad. The “sacred public square” is one where one religion is preferred over all others, is “established” or is even a monopoly.

The “naked public square” on the other hand, in removing all religion, is equally unjust because it leaves no room for the faithful. Stalinist Russia or contemporary North Korea illustrate the problem. An alternative middle way is, according to Guinness, what he calls the “civil public square”, where people of all faiths and none, are free to enter into public life on the basis of their faith .

Working out what true tolerance will look like in a liberal democracy is complex. As tens of thousands of displaced people around the world look at Australia as an attractive destination of freedom and opportunity, and many Australians rightly and admirably advocate for their acceptance, the question remains as to what kind of welcome they will receive when they get here.

When the loudest stupidest people are shaping a new culture and ideology. Good luck with that👍

That God spoke to all of us?

I agree in part with this article; however, I see a prophetic edge to Folau’s message in keeping with the Bible. The church needs to wake up; the good news is that Jesus died for our sins and saved us from hell.

He's hearing messages from God. He needs some serious mental health help. He's wandering into psychosis.

Ot doesn’t matter what he wishes. Folau said nothing wrong. And those who persecuted him WILL pay a price...

Words spoken by Jesus (The WORD) who was with FATHER from the beginning of Creation. Mat 10:33 'But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.'

Everyone seems to be forgetting that this isn't at all about free speech or religious beliefs, its all about contract law, the fact that Folau, in order to receive a benefit of one million dollars agreed not to repeat specific public statements, a condition he knowingly ignored.

he just needs to watch George Carlin's brilliant 'Religion is bullshit' show on youtube

'Better to keep conversations going... rather than... drive their views underground.' Only if you ignore the effects these 'conversations' have on those condemned by them. Imagine closeted teens in a religious family, trying to muster bravery to come out, then this happens.

You can't protect people from themselves on social media. Ask Donald Trump.

Don’t be a dick is what I’d say to him

Another rubbish article missing the point. Nobody is stopping Folau having or expressing his views. But his utterances go against his employer’s principles. He can express his views but can’t trash his employer’s business and not lose his contract.

nice to see you guys not jumping on the moral high ground band wagon for once 👏

'You will be hated by everyone because of My name, but the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.' Mark 13:13 and lots of other places in the New Testament

pallisier Funny how Izzy managed to omit the behaviours that would also condemn him to eternal damnation. Perhaps he hates himself so much he doesn't want to save himself?

What crap! Believes in the teachings of hate against the LGBTQ+ communities by his primitive white man God in the hell of the Middle East instead of live & let live.

He is NOT being silenced. he is facing the consequences of his words.

In short: Religious people can say anything they like without consequence.

Comment: Enough with the Israel Folau hot takes
