“Anybody who contravenes the provisions of this section shall be guilty of an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of N200,000 or imprisonment to a term of three years or both," the law states.In the bid to reduce the number of sickle cell patients in the state, the Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a bill that makes genotype test compulsory before marriage.
The new law also seeks to reduce abuse, stigmatisation and exploitation victims of sickle cell anaemia go through in the state. According to the law, no religious body or marriage registry “shall perform solemnisation of Holy Matrimony”, without presentation of a sickle cell disease prevention certificate from the intending couple.
This is a welcomed idea
Most Churches already insist on this. Giving it a legal teeth takes it a step further. Good one

This is a good development, at least to protect the future health of unborn children
They should rather focus on funding research to find lasting solution and management of the stuff
Is this our main problem, is I time those law makers understand the reason they where elected. How many job/Security oriented bills have they pass into law. We have leaders that don't think or reason, please reconsider the people your voted for and call back your vote.
