The Federal Court has vowed to work on staff morale and wellbeing as it deals with high executive turnover, a troubled technology transformation and fallout from a document access regime that has upset media and judges.that a Sydney-Melbourne divide is emerging on the country’s national commercial court.
In her first months on the job, the chief justice toured all the court’s eight registries – a move welcomed by staff and the judges. An inquiry ordered by the High Court in 2020 found that Heydon sexually harassed six associates during his time on the court. He denies any misconduct.According to insiders, Mortimer told Jackman she “didn’t want Dyson Heydon wandering around the corridors of the court”.
Lagos also presides over the unit that provides corporate services to the Federal Court; her “baby” is CourtPath, which she promoted as a digital transformation of the systems for the Federal Court entity. The court declined to answer questions about how many of Lagos’ direct reports had left in the past three years.
It was the first court in Australia to live-stream proceedings and its “open file” process for important cases – such as the recent Bruce Lehrmann v Ten defamation trial – has been a hit with the media, practitioners and the public since it was first trialled in 2011. It means anyone can view court documents without first asking – and paying a $60 fee – when granted access.
“It is Chief Justice Mortimer’s preference to speak at public events in a variety of forums, to a variety of audiences.”
