Comment: NRL has used its brand to sear mark on de Belin before his day in court | SMHsport

The Dragons’ best player this season wasn’t in the middle of the SCG on Anzac Day. He wasn’t in the stands. Yet he’s treating every training session like he’s playing a Test match for Australia, snapping teammates in half or showing them up with his skill and focus.

Next week – most likely Monday or Tuesday – Justice Melissa Perry will determine whether he will be allowed to play as he defends himself against an aggravated sexual assault charge relating to an alleged incident involving a 19-year-old woman in a Wollongong apartment on December 9 last year. The game will survive no matter the result. But it will be arguably the most important day of de Belin’s life thus far.

There is a concerning story at play here about the orchestrated campaign to force de Belin to stand down. Several leading figures phoned de Belin suggesting he should stand down. It rocked him. He wasn’t standing down, he told them, because he was innocent. Let’s get this straight: the players’ association was given three business hours to consider a rule that will have life-changing consequences for players? Is this really how the NRL should treat one of its own? Did the NRL not learn anything from the Brett Stewart situation from a few years earlier?

There’s certainly plenty of fans urging Gould to come to their club but it would surprise if he ends up anywhere in the near future: especially if he receives a healthy payout from the Panthers in coming days.

SMHsport Remember jack was out is married so should not have been with the lady in any event. He tarnished his own reputation.

SMHsport the fact they took 2 months to act shows they waited to see what the impact of the charges were more than your claim it they acted hastily

SMHsport If he is found not guilty the NRL will also have their day in court, that I am sure off.

SMHsport Wow... He is such a great player and ready to 'break someone in half? ...and also left a young woman with horrific injuries to throat-abdomen-shoulder etc. He did this to his name.. not the NRL Buy hey he was the best player of the season. auspol

SMHsport Treating men as guilty before a fair hearing in court, the lowest thing I’ve seen the NRL ever be a part of.
