NRL chief fears de Belin scandal could cost game 'hundreds of millions'

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg fears off-field incidents such as the sexual assault case against Jack de Belin could cost the game "hundreds of millions of dollars" in fees paid by broadcasters to televise the competition, explosive court documents reveal.

A downturn in ratings will ultimately lead to lowering of the value of the broadcast rights, which has the potential to cause losses to the NRL in the hundreds of millions of dollars.The present five-year television deal is worth $1.8thillion and expires in 2022. Greenberg said he feared a slide in ratings could be catastrophic for the NRL when it came to negotiating a new deal for the 2023 season and beyond.

“I base this opinion on the reaction of other sponsors or potential sponsors discussed above and, additionally, upon a communication received from of the parties whose contract ends in 2019.” “This will place us under financial pressure to achieve set revenue budgets for the 2019 and 2020 seasons, given that once the season kicks off, the majority of sponsorship properties linked to broadcast exposure decline as the rounds progress.”

SMHsport Greenberg should go into politics, his use of rubbery numbers is up their with anyone. Even his daughters friends won’t follow the sport anymore, give me strength, he’s making this up as he goes. What happened to innocent until proven guilty, forget the money, it’s about truth.
