The ban, passed last summer, was among many conservative states’ efforts to end abortion in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.

Iowans supporting access to abortion rally on April 11 outside the state's high court in Des Moines. to take affect, one of the latest rulings to restrict abortion access since the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 decision ending federal protections for the procedure.

The judges ruled 4-3 that the law — passed by the Republican-led legislature in 2023 — is constitutional, reversing a temporary restraining order put in place by a district court last year, meaning the ongoing lawsuit at that level can proceed.the landscape of reproductive health in Iowa, where around 4000 women sought abortions last year, as most women now will have to travel outside the state to terminate a pregnancy.
