Plane carrying WikiLeaks founder touched down more than two hours before the scheduled start of a plea hearing that is expected to result in his freedom

has arrived at a Saipan court where he is expected plead guilty to a single felony charge, in a deal with the US justice department that will see him freed and allowed to return home to Australia.

The courthouse sits at the foot of lush hillside on Saipan’s coast, in the village of Gualo Rai. Inside the wood-panelled courtroom, two flags sat beside the judge’s chair - one, the Stars and Stripes, the other for this Pacific territory.

Before being locked up in London, Assange spent years hiding out in the Ecuadorian embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden to face allegations of rape and sexual assault, which he has denied and which were later dropped by Swedish authorities.
