The suspect accused in a violent hate crime earlier this week was arraigned on several charges Friday in Rochester City Court, where he continued to lash out.

Alexander Ortiz, 29, of Rochester, was arraigned in Rochester City Court Friday, June 14, 2024, for allegedly assaulting a man Tuesday, June 11, on Monroe Avenue in what police are calling a hate crime. Ortiz is accused of striking a pedestrian with a vehicle outside the Price Rite on University Avenue less than an hour later. Rochester, N.Y. —

Alexander Ortiz, who's facing charges in two separate incidents, is accused of attacking a victim in the city's bustling Monroe Avenue neighborhood Tuesday night, yelling homophobic slurs and striking them multiple times. " our officer got down there, we began to interview the victim, and we learned that there was a vehicle that appeared to be following the victim," explained Rochester Police Captain Greg Bello. "When he started to walk away from him, he drove directly at the victim, causing him to jump out of the way to avoid being hit by the car.

The 29-year-old pleaded not guilty to several charges including third-degree assault — which has been designated as a hate crime, two counts of reckless endangerment and failing to report a collision involving physical injury."If you are facing discrimination, if you are facing crimes against you especially because of any type of hateful thing, please reach out, because we are here," said Bello.
