Ed Banner worked for General Motors for more than 40 years, served in the Navy for four years, and testified for about 30 minutes in the trial of a president’s son — but it was a very memorable half-hour. The 80-year-old Banner came to court wearing a light-blue suit, glasses, and an occasionally confused expression as he tried to hear the questions being asked of him. First, court officials offered him headphones, but that didn’t seem to help.
Banner confirmed that in October 2018, he found a silver pistol in a trash can outside an upscale grocery store and took it home, where he kept it in a cardboard box from his days as a GM worker. “I definitely remember finding that,” he said. When a police investigator came looking for the gun, Banner said he immediately turned it over. Though the investigator testified earlier that Banner had kept the gun with a bunch of socks — and the gun itself inside a sock — Banner scoffed at that detail.
