Report documents threats and attacks in four provinces and shows activists believe they were initiated by the police, security companies or groups acting for miners

Report documents threats and attacks in four provinces and shows affected parties believe they were initiated by the police, security companies or groups acting for mining interestsMineworkers take part in a march at Lonmin's Marikana mine in this file photo. Picture: REUTERS

While SA has one of the world’s biggest mining industries, the activities of companies extracting metals and minerals ranging from platinum to coal have often run afoul of communities due to the impact they have on land use — ranging from traditional burial grounds to grazing — as well as the water and air pollution they cause. The projects often divide communities as they also bring jobs and other opportunities.

The report makes reference to the March 2016 murder of Sikhosiphi Rhadebe, the chair of a community-based organisation formed to oppose mineral-sands mining by Mineral Commodities in Xolobeni, Eastern Cape. Police have not identified any suspects in the killing. “The only thing we get from those mines and power stations is the challenge of air pollution,” said Sylvia Sebina, a community activist from the eastern town of Lephalale, which lies at the heart of the country’s coal industry.

HRW calls for arrests after attacks on foreign natioanlsThe Human Rights Watch urged South African authorities to prosecute the perpetrators of deadly xenophobic violence. To me it appears like SA leadership enjoys to see foreigners being attacked and killed. Their stuff looted. They do nothing about it. They must just come clean n say everyone with a foreign background leave SA weather documented or not. It's sad bcz black South Africans only attack black foreigners n mainly their neighbors n politicians are using foreigners as a campaign tool. SA poverty was not brought by foreigners. Don't use foreigners as a scapegoat to cover mismanagement of the economy. SA is producing graduates every year and no jobs. So the graduates want to work in farms n as hse keepers bcz the are the easily available jobs. Chinese are taking over n enriching their country n that is fine bcz they have a light skin. It's shame hw black think.
