FILE - An Appeal To Heaven flag is pictured as people gather at Independence Mall to support President Donald Trump as he visits the National Constitution Center to participate in the ABC News town hall, Sept. 15, 2020, in Philadelphia.

Justice Samuel Alito said on Wednesday there were no ethical concerns regarding his presence on the bench in certain high-stakes cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. Find out about the flags that have caused controversy after being spotted at his homes, and the ethics code challenges confronting the top court. An Appeal To Heaven flag is pictured at an event supporting Donald Trump in Philadelphia on Sept. 15, 2020. The flag flew in early 2021 at a vacation property owned by the wife of U.S.

Alito explained to the New York Times, which first broke the story about the upside-down flag, that his wife put it up after a heated dispute with anti-Trump neighbours. According to Americanflags.com, the pine tree on the flag symbolized strength and resilience in the New England colonies, while the words "Appeal to Heaven" stemmed from the belief that God would deliver the colonists from tyranny."I was not aware of any connection between this historic flag and the 'Stop the Steal Movement' and neither was my wife," Alito wrote.

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson displays the Appeal to Heaven flag in the hallway outside his office next to the flag of his home state, Louisiana.
