Justice Maya is aware of what awaits her when she becomes the 'first among equals' at the Constitutional CourtIt took nearly 30 years but South Africa did eventually get there. From August, the country will for the first time have a female chief justice, in the person of Mandisa Maya.
Maya was interviewed and recommended by the Judicial Service Commission this week, following her earlier nomination by President Cyril Ramaphosa. All that is left now is for the president to formally announce Maya as the successor to Chief Justice Raymond Zondo. She follows a line of esteemed jurists who have held the nation’s most senior judicial position.
Maya is aware of what awaits her when she becomes the “first among equals” at the Constitutional Court. “If I’m appointed to this position, I know that I will bear the enormous responsibility of ensuring that the institution remains strong, retains its integrity and firmly executes its role of protecting and promoting the role of the Constitution and the law so that our country, especially the poor and most vulnerable members of our society, is guaranteed access to justice,” she said in her interview.
Active hostility towards the judiciary, particularly those serving at the apex court, is going to intensify as anti-constitutionalists up their ante. Maya must steel herself to stand firm in leadership of this important arm of state while she executes her stated passion of bringing justice closer to those who need it.Who we choose to trust can have a profound impact on our lives.
