Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton described gangland barrister turned police informer Nicola Gobbo as a “glittering prize” in a 2014 inquiry.

In the raft of documents are parts of Mr Ashton’s evidence to the Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission’s 2014 review of the force’s use of Ms Gobbo.Mr Ashton, then a deputy commissioner, told the IBAC inquiry that the force was under considerable pressure during the heart of the gangland war and Ms Gobbo’s information was vital.“[This] human source comes on board that could potentially solve a bunch of...murders of prevent others ... and this glittering prize ...

“You might say now, yeah, absolutely you would do this or do that but if I’m trying to think why sensible steps like that weren’t taken, that’s what I’m sort of left with when I try and reconcile that,” he said, according to the IBAC review.Mr Ashton rejected the term “noble cause” as the explanation for using her as it implied “that you are aware of the fact that you are doing something improper”.
