Breaking: New Zealand passes gun law banning high-powered rifles

In Parliament on Wednesday night, MPs of all political persuasions overwhelmingly voted in favour of The Arms Amendment Bill after its crucial third reading.

Earlier in the day Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern reflected on her hospital visit to victims of the mosque shootings. "I struggle to recall any single gunshot wounds. In every case they spoke of multiple injuries, multiple debilitating injuries that deemed it impossible for them to recover in days, let alone weeks. They will carry disabilities for a lifetime and that's before you consider the psychological impact. We are here for them."

Straight after that she made the decision to ban the weapons, knowing parliament would be with her, she said. She also acknowledged the buyback scheme for compensation, which would be worked up over the next few weeks.National's police spokesman Chris Bishop spoke on behalf of National in support of the bill and wanted to acknowledge the Prime Minister for her remarks and her leadership in the hours and days following the shooting.

I really hope they ban shooting people too. Because if criminals are going to obey gun bans, surely they’ll obey murder bans? And also ban heroin. Because if banning guns will keep them off the street- surely banning heroin will do the same?

Fantastic News just have to disarm Mossad now and we can all sleep in peace...

mbachelard Well done NZ

The headline says “high powered rifles” but the article says “semi-automatic and military-style weapons”. Which is it? Does the ban include hand guns? What about non semi-auto military style weapons? Are they still legal?

ban all guns would be a much.better move by NZ.

Excellent

NZ staged attack to bring in gun laws

lalakala778 Great news...

‘All we like sheep have gone astray’, which includes those with an insular approach to firearm legislation, in response to what was a horrific crime. Mass murder committed by one, penalizes law abiding NZ gun owners nationally, & eventually to total disarmament of all civilians.

Finally the passing of a sensible law.

Korks83 Wow

Awesome! NZ PM jacindaardern continues to show what true, strong, determined leadership is! 🌟🇳🇿 Paging the U.S. govt... anyone?... anyone?... GOP? ...anyone? 😒 guncontrolnow

Whoppieeeeeee PM👍💕 Your a beautiful example to the world and wish I could give you an Aussie hug💕

bsadams25 Good

Apparently 1 NZ MP voted against the bill! Really? 🙄🙄. Good job though jacindaardern

😶 only the high-powered rifles.... What about the other guns....

So now when another person goes on a stabbing rampage with a knife we will ban all knives its a terrible thing what happened but There must be a better way than knee jerk reactions to everything as the only people this effects is the genuine people not the idiots

so what, will not stop people with intent

Criminals don’t really care about gun laws. Try again.

Congratulations. Pity USA will not follow what is just common sense, protect your citizens, especially the children/students.

Nonsense headline, kids in the newsroom again?

Railroaded, borderline undemocratic.

. Why can’t Australia do that..!? Oh, wait...

deusexstigma

now who drafted those laws so quickly?

PM missed the boat on that one. But lets keep saying how good she supposedly is.

The Lady is delivering, hats off to her

It's a bit late now ... What made them think NZ would escape the violence of terrorism

New livestreaming legislation fails to take into account how the internet actually worksIn response to the live streamed terror attack in New Zealand last month, new laws have just been passed by the Australian parliament. We are ruled by the dumbest lot of politicians and administrators ever. Wouldn't know a ROM from a RAM and that the internet was designed to stop the likes of you and other dictators from interfering with free speech. You can't stop it, wankers. Political posturing by Morrison. Orwellian For fuck sake this will have a avalanche effect on alot of things we all enjoy. Does this mean the UFC will be banned because its “violent content” or maybe Game of thrones?
