A Fijian domestic worker illegally imported to suburban Brisbane cooked and cleaned around the clock but was denied access to a dentist, a court has heard. The trial is expected to continue for most of the week.

A Fijian woman allegedly trafficked into forced labour by a Queensland couple worked around the clock and was denied access to a doctor, a court has heard.

The Brisbane District Court also heard the woman often laid awake in her bed at night due to the pain caused by untreated tooth decay, and how she had been forced to clean up after a visiting grandmother who had soiled herself. She also has a brother and a brother-in-law who are police officers in her home country, the court heard.

But in 2006, the Pulinis secured work in Australia as a civil engineer and public servant respectively.

This is nothing less than modern day slavery. I hope that this couple will be forced to financially pay for the years of service, be fined for domestic violence and serve time behind bars for human trafficking and rights violations. Despicable.
