The Balmain house at the centre of the defamation case.On Monday, the first day of the defamation trial, builder Anthony Cosco accused his neighbour, Sydney lawyer Vanessa Hutley, of defaming him by telling Channel Nine'sthat he bullied and harassed her family after the Cosco family bought the house next door for $1.75 million in 2013.
"Frankly, the conduct of everybody seems pathetic," presiding judge Stephen Rothman said late on Monday. "It gets worse," Ms Chrysanthou replied. The court heard that in 2016 Ms Hutley took out an apprehended personal violence order against Mr Cosco, who responded by taking one out against her. Mr Cosco told the court Ms Hutley called him "a cretin" and made cracks about his intelligence, while he denied calling her a "dog" and making barking noises. Ms Chrysanthou alleged Ms Hutley had a "captive audience" and had hurled abuse from her property overlooking the Coscos' construction site."It does Your Honour, it does sound like the Globe [Theatre]," Ms Chrysanthou replied.
Mr Cosco admitted that he initially denied to police that he knew who had hosed Ms Hutley, saying he was "trying to protect my mate". The labourer was subsequently charged with assault.
