Applications owned or controlled by Chinese companies have been put on notice with the passage of legislation that forces a sale of TikTok within the next year.

“Do we want Chinese software on our devices? Congress has said no. The administration has said no. So this is just chapter one of a longer story, " said Jim Lewis, the director of the Strategic Technologies Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “The Chinese are so active in cyber espionage that this is like one drop out of the bucket. It’s a good step but it’s far from enough to deal with the problem we have.

“The facts and the Constitution are on our side, and we expect to prevail again," CEO Shou Chew said in a TikTok post last week, echoing the company's stance that a ban violates the First Amendment.
