This week, itthat if Trump should win again, his sons, Eric and Donald Trump Jr, will take a formal role in his administration.
It has been said that Eric and Don Jr will serve on their father’s “transition team”, which in the months between the election and inauguration prepares the new administration, and weed out anyone they deem “disloyal”. The Trumps intend to scour thousands of people who would serve in a second Trump administration to test their personal affiliation – they do not wish the top officials of the new government to be loyal to America, but rather to Donald Trump himself.
There is, of course, a term for an enterprise that values loyalty above all else, expects its associates to act outside the law, and which operates as a family affair: it is usually referred to as a mafia. If it was ever in doubt that Donald Trump intended to make the US a mafia state, that moment has long since passed.No level of loyalty is sufficient to prevent Trump replacing one of his own associates with someone he feels confident will be more loyal – usually because they’re in his family.
Mafia movies paint far too generous a picture of the real thing: they are not about community, or loyalty, or honour – they are parasitic, they rule through fear, and they are extractive.
