One of policeman who first registered former lawyer Nicola Gobbo as an informer may have had “intimate relations” with her, a public inquiry has been told.

A royal commission is focusing on Ms Gobbo, a gangland barrister who became a high-level informer known as Lawyer X or 3838 and provided information for some of the state’s most serious criminal investigations.

Detective Senior Sergeant Argall, who was a constable in 1995, is listed to be called as a witness next week. Former police officer Michael Holding, who also gave evidence on Friday, remembers a distinct smell of marijuana in the Rathdowne Street home, which Ms Gobbo owned. Ms Gobbo’s boyfriend Brian Wilson was charged and later pleaded guilty to trafficking, while Ms Gobbo pleaded guilty to possessing the drugs.“I must admit, Ms Gobbo and I didn’t really hit it off,” Mr Holding said.Mr Holding, who was not involved in registering her, said he was aware at that time she was related to a member of the judiciary.

The inquiry was earlier told she set up her boyfriend, Mr Wilson, in an undercover sting that was halted after policeman Jack Blayney said she was a “loose cannon”.
