Already a subscriber?Legal protection allowing private schools to discriminate against students and teachers for their sexual orientation or gender identity should be axed, Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus has been advised.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese this week told Opposition Leader Peter Dutton he wanted bipartisan support for the law changes to avoid a divisivewhen tensions are already running high given fears of antisemitism and Islamophobia. “Not acting will be a blow to our community and to all the people waiting for better protections including women, people who are divorced or in de facto relationships, and people of faith,” Mr Thorpe said.
He went on to say that the government wanted to “enhance protections in anti-discrimination law in a way that brings Australians together”.
