JK Rowling has slammed the SNP's "ludicrous" hate crime law and vowed not to delete her old social media messages. The billionaire Harry Potter author today joined the growing criticism of the Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act, which comes into effect on April 1. The new legislation consolidates creates a new offence of "stirring up hatred" against protected characteristics including age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, and transgender identity.
Police Scotland has pledged to investigate every hate crime complaint reported - despite the force adopting a "proportionate response" approach to other crimes. Critics have warned it could lead to stand-up comedians, actors or other performers being questioned. Rowling, whose primary residence is in Scotland, was previously embroiled in a misgendering row with transgender broadcaster India Willoughby. Police in Northumbria cleared Rowling of criminality after she stated “India is cosplaying a misogynistic male fantasy of what a woman is”. The author has now responded to messages that she should delete the comments prior to the law coming into effect.
