A mum' fight to have the law changed for the way children accused of rape are dealt with by the court system has heard her petition heard in parliament.
The woman, identified only as Julie, was devastated when daughter Maya’s alleged rapist avoided prosecution in court due to his age. Her petition calls for the rules on prosecuting under-16s charged with rape to be changed to ensure they are treated as adults. Last week, it was heard by the Citizen Participation and Public Petitions Committee and MSPs have vowed to address the issues raised.Julie, 54, from Ayrshire, said: “Victims are being failed. There needs to be justice... under the current system there isn’t for many victims like Maya.”
The Scottish Government said its policy was to try to keep children out of the criminal justice system wherever it was possible.Top news stories today Don't miss the latest news from around Scotland and beyond - Sign up to our daily newsletter here.
