Critics worry that the laws will legalize censorship and prevent organization of protests against the government.

Russian President Vladimir Putin gestures as he meets with members of the public in Simferopol, Crimea, on March 18. By Emily Tamkin Emily Tamkin Foreign affairs Email Bio Follow March 18 at 3:21 PM Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed into law a set of bills that will make it illegal to spread “fake news.”

Prosecutors can direct their complaints about online media to the state, which can block access to websites if the offending material isn’t taken down. “In other words, it significantly expands the repressive power of Russia’s repressive apparatus. This may be compared to the Stalin’s Troika, a commission of three for express judgment in the Soviet Union during the time of Joseph Stalin who issued sentences to people after simplified, speedy investigations and without a public and fair trial,” she added.

Critics have said that the legislation amounts to “direct censorship,” and a petition saying as much was, as the Moscow Times noted, signed by more than 100 people, including Ludmila Ulitskaya, a well-known novelist and short-story writer. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “This sphere of fake news, insulting and so on, is regulated fairly harshly in many countries of the world including Europe. It is therefore, of course, necessary to do it in our country, too.

mjhegar SO, PUTIN LET FOX, THE AMERICAN PROPAGANDA NETWORK INTO RUSSIA!

Are you worried you won't be able to influence events in Russia without making fake news any more? Why do you think U.S. determine what the Russian prosecutor general can do or not. Why do need protests in Russia SO MUCH? Make your own business!

This is some not fake news.Russia needs to stop bullying homosexuals. They also need to stop censoring their videos.Yes Mr.Putin I said it.I actually wrote it to you many times.

Strange what they consider Free Speech All for the truth but free speech more of suppression of the truth Should be a basic human right to know the truth instead of tangled in a web of lies about the truth in this mad pig pile we call society it’s pretty low chasing fools gold

EvaUnalove Do you think this is a good thing? Or just an effort to silence criticism? I’m thinking that the government will be able to say whatever they want, and anyone that disagrees, is persecuted for “fake news” (ps: i wasn’t sure how to show you this. still new to Twitter)

Very Trumpian

mjhegar Hey MAGA your dreams are reality in Russia, pack your bags your Utopia awaits!

Must be the reason for the w/e tweetstorm. 45 is green w/envy!

Disrespect=fake=illegal. And the government gets to decide. Doesn't get much more dictator-y than that.

Same old, same old. Nothing new here ins Russkie Land.

You are telling me the truth is illegal in Russia now! Trump must be jealous.

Weird since they are the country that makes FakeNews

(1/2) On Sept. 11, 2014, every voting Democrat (54) in the U.S. Senate voted to advance a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution (S.J. Res. 19) to empower federal and state lawmakers to ration or even criminalize virtually any form of speech that might 'influence elections'

(2/2) including power to criminalize speech on just one side of an issue. So, a majority of senators voted to gut the 1st Amendment and allow Putin-like anti-speech laws, but this was short of the 60 votes needed to overcome filibuster by 42 Republicans (or the 2/3 vote to pass).

How and who determines what fake news is, Putin?

That IS a slippery slope. Who is defining what is 'fake news?' Typical Russian tyranny...

Donald Trump the moment he reads this headline....

Don't ever forget that no matter how many times Russia changes its name, it will always be the same repressive shithole.

Our 'dope' president better not get any ideas. No way this will happen in our country. PutinLaw

Who will decide what is Fake News?

PakNasirShah

Sounds important. Too bad I can't read the article.

Yeah, they’re not bro’s.

Oh so you mean like Facebook, Twitter and all other Social Media censorship of free speech using whatever excuse does not fit their narrative?

Leftists keep saying Trump loves this yet they're the ones who cheer when conservatives are being censored 🤣🤣🤣

Saying anything negative about Putin is now illegal in Russia. Will Russian people accept this? Will Russian military kill anyone who protests? Will Donald Trump try this? Will Trump supporters tolerate it if he did?

“See Donald, this is how you do it...”

Boris is afraid of Mueller’s report reaching his captives.

McCarthy style hearings here we come.

Poor Trump; he's gona be sooo jealous!

2/2 But America should have a 'fake news' bill as well...The Bill should state that the Media can be charged with fraud upon the public if they purposely and knowingly publish news that are blatant lies.

How long before trump tweets his approval on this move?

1/2 Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a controversial set of bills that make it a crime to “disrespect” the state and spread “fake news” online, Russian media reported on Monday. --- I read the Report and agree with it except for the part of 'disrespecting' the State.

That's how dicKtator work!

DemocRATs planning to do the same here in the US. WalkAway

It should be like that everywhere, BUT it depends on who holds the authority to say what’s true and what isn’t;)

Did the “ fake news” slogan come from Putin or the other way around?

You wouldn’t exist if that became law here. No wonder you’re nervous, wapo

Omg! I can just see realDonaldTrump TrumpPutin trying to pass a similar law here in the U.S. Feels like we are regressing to the 1930s. PutinIsOurHitler

I’m guessing that fake news in this context is anything that Putin doesn’t like or shows him in a poor light!

PANIC in DC. PAIN 4 C_A 🤡. T-1 4 DS criminals. Bye bye Mockingbird Media. Got popcorn 🍿?

How long until Trump tweets that the United States should do this?

Journalism is officially dead in Russia. RIP.

Thank Goodness for the 1st Amendment!! The Donald would love to do this!!

'Putin outlaws all criticism including printed criticism and online criticism from all media and citizens.' Fixed it for you.

Does this mean FoxNews will be illegal in Russia?

Isn't that what we said about.......never mind. Damnit.
