By Ruth Eglash Ruth Eglash Reporter covering Israel and the Palestinian territories Email Bio Follow March 17 at 5:03 PM JERUSALEM — Israel’s Supreme Court on Sunday disqualified a far-right candidate from the April 9 national election and overturned a decision by the Central Election Committee to block a joint Arab slate and a candidate from a leftist alliance from the race.
“There is a legal junta here who wants to take over our lives,” Ben Ari said in a statement. “This is not democracy.” Parties and individuals can be disqualified from running for office for three reasons — rejecting Israel as a Jewish and democratic state, inciting racism, or expressing support for an enemy state or for terrorist organizations.
Israeli commentators and U.S. Jewish groups condemned the move, viewing Jewish Power as an offshoot of Kach, a group once led by an extremist rabbi, Meir Kahane. Israel outlawed Kach several decades ago, and the United States considers it a terrorist organization. The U.S.-born Kahane was assassinated in New York in 1990.A coalition of right-wing parties, including Netanyahu’s Likud faction, had pushed to ban the joint Balad-United Arab List slate, as well as the leftist candidate Ofer Cassif.
But it allowed a Jew hating arab nationalist group to run. So much for the claim of apartheid or a Jewish only state. If only....
Wow
Person having PhD in Israel land Archeology but descendant of Mazarhi ⚠️⚠️⚠️ not qualified for next election 🚫
Israel is an ethno state
Damage control🤣🤣🤣🤣
A great triumph for democracy. Bibi’s racist “Basic Law” is next.
Hopefully we never get to the point where we BAN someone from running because of their ideology....Maybe I just have to much faith in my fellow citizens and respect their freedom to have their own opinion.
The Israel-firsters will use this tokenism to falsely claim that Arabs have equal rights.
Wonderful. It just shows how much the alt-right are respected in Israel. Maybe this bit of news will S MAGAs TFU...
Truly, this is their first step into the 20th century.
At least Israeli courts haven't been over run by fascists even if their government has.
