.NZPCommissioner: I have no intelligence about current imminent threats, but I would never assume anything in this situation. MORE:

The man charged with murder following the terror attack in New Zealand that saw 49 people shot and killed has faced court in Christchurch. Australian-born 28-year-old Brenton Tarrant made a brief appearance in court on Saturday, before being remanded in custody. Tarrant will appear in the High Court on April 5th. Members of the public were not permitted inside the court room for the hearing due to security concerns.

Investigations have begun in New Zealand and Australia into how Tarrant escaped detection by anti-terror teams. Police in both nations confirm Tarrant had not come under notice despite posting terror threats on social media. Two other people remain in custody, with inquiries ongoing to establish whether they were directly involved with the incident. NZ Police say they are not actively looking for anyone else involved in the shootings.
