New Zealand Police have confirmed at least 49 people have been killed in mass shootings at two mosques in Christchurch packed with worshippers attending Friday prayers. Police Commissioner Mike Bush confirmed on Friday that 41 people died at the Masjid Al Noor mosque and seven died at the Linwood Islamic Centre, while another person died after being treated at Christchurch Hospital. Dozens remain critically injured.

Australian-born 28-year-old Brenton Tarrant will face court in Christchurch on Saturday charged with murder. Investigations have begun in New Zealand and Australia into how Tarrant escaped detection by anti-terror teams. Police in both nations confirm Brenton Tarrant had not come under notice despite posting terror threats on social media. Two other men and a woman have been arrested over the incident, but one may not have been involved.
